Heiter Session: Home Styling Session with Java Bere

For Heiter Society members (from GBP27/month) and paid Substack members (from GBP7/month) only.

Join Java Bere for a dip into her workshop ‘Tell the Story of Your Home.’ Together we will look at how the spaces we inhabit shift with the seasons, what we all need from our spaces in Autumn and Winter, and how we can reflect this, through practical tasks, creative play and styling prompts.

What to bring along:

  • A notebook and pen.

  • Something sensory that reminds you of happy childhood memories of Autumn/Winter. It can be anything: a blanket, a candle, a twig from the garden, a basket, a tin of soup! It doesn’t need to be aesthetically pleasing, it’s more about what the subject evokes in you.

More about Java:

Java Bere is a writer, artist, table and home stylist. Together with her partner Jon, their two boys, and a cat called Nutmeg, she lives in a gorgeous Hebden Bridge (West Yorkshire) family home that is full of character and filled with stories. The stories told through that home represent and are inspired by their life together but also Java’s upbringing: She grew up between London, Scotland, France, and Spain, finally ending up in Manchester for fifteen years, where she worked as an actress and later as a theatre agent. All those glorious places shaped her as a person as well as her current work and aesthetic.

The Heiter Society Book Club - Autumn Meet-up for I Capture the Castle

Free online event. Everyone is welcome.

As part of our shared pursuit of “heiter”, to live more joyfully, we have created the Heiter Society Bookclub. There are many reasons why strangers may forge a connection, yet one universal thread weaving through all ages is the sharing of stories. While reading may often be a solitary pursuit, it possesses the remarkable ability to gather people together. Indeed, the act of reading as part of a group is a potent force for enriching our lives. We meet four times a year to read carefully curated, short, and not-too-recent, books that are around the theme of being present to the simple joys and pleasures of our daily lives. It is not essential to have read the book to attend if you don't mind spoilers.

The next Heiter Society Bookclub read has been chosen and it's I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. A charming, witty, and deeply atmospheric narrative, told from the perspective of a young woman coming of age, provides a rich ground for discussions on family, class, and the complexities of love.

For this book club, we'd love to explore the idea of sharing books once we're done reading them. If you have a copy and are happy to read it and pass it along, let us know. Likewise, if you'd like to receive the book once someone else has finished, just get in touch!

We hope to see you there! Join the conversation 19th of November at 7.30pm UK | 8.30pm CET. The zoom link for the discussion is below and we'll share it again closer to the time.

If November feels too far away and you're looking to cultivate a little heiter you'll find a moment of calm and lots of inspiration in the latest Heiter E-Zine HERE.

Homecoming in Winter — A Heiter Breakfast Gathering in London

Tickets: £59 – Non-members, £45 – Heiter Society Members

As the year draws to a close and the season turns inward, we invite you to join us for Homecoming in Winter — a morning of warmth, connection, and reflection hosted by heiter.

Begin your day with coffee or tea on arrival, followed by an intimate panel conversation exploring well-being and the art of feeling at home in your body. Together, we’ll reflect on how lifestyle, nourishment, self-care, creativity, and community can help us find balance and belonging — especially during the colder months.

We’re delighted to welcome cookbook author Alissa Timoshkina and artist Laura Gee as guest speakers. Alissa will share a recipe from her latest book KAPUSTA and Laura will introduce a couple of calming art techniques for you to try out at home.

After the discussion, enjoy breakfast and the opportunity to connect with fellow members of the heiter community. Each guest will also receive a thoughtfully curated goodie bag to take a little bit of “heiter” home.

Spaces are limited to keep the morning intimate. We can’t wait to share this cozy winter gathering with you.

Heiter Society Book Club - Winter meet up

FREE ACCESS - everyone is welcome to join!

We meet three times a year to read carefully curated, short, and not-too-recent, books that are around the theme of being present to the simple joys and pleasures of our daily lives. It is not essential to have read the book to attend if you don’t mind spoilers.

Winter Book Club

We are closing the year with a timely read, Wintering by Katherine May. A quietly transformative read, a balm for anyone feeling the chill of life’s darker seasons. May explores the notion of “wintering” not just as a season but as a necessary retreat—a period to rest, reflect, and regain strength.

We’ll be meeting online on Thursday, the 12th December 7:30pm UK | 8:30pm CET, to discuss the book.

I look forward to seeing some of you there!

The sessions are run by business coaches and experts that assist you in reducing the noise out there and focusing on what’s important in running your business: your well-being and skills.

This online session, that is run on the 15th of September at 10.00AM BST | 11.00AM CET by life coach (for creatives) Kathryn Ho, is about helping you feel connected to the spirit of your business. And by ‘spirit’, Kathryn means whatever you want it to mean. This could be its essence or personality; that feeling that drives you to create; or you could choose to view the spirit of your business as the presence of a different entity. It’s completely up to you.

We’ll go through a number of reflective exercises that invite you to explore the relationship between you and your business: what feels nourishing, what feels supportive, and what might want tending to?

We’ll also explore how you can invoke the spirit of your business and how you can remain connected to it in times of challenge and difficulty. What environments and activities help you feel connected and inspired?

You will need pen and paper (and whatever else you love to use) to take notes. There will also be room for group discussion as this is often where the magic, unintended learnings happen.

The one-hour workshop will be in three parts, with a blend of journalling prompts, practical ideas, and time for questions as a group.

We'll consider how to connect with our customers (without trying to appeal to everyone); how to use the small size of our businesses to our advantage when making decisions, and creative ways to stand out as a small online shop.

Heiter Session: Communicating Emotion Through Photography with Vanessa Simpson, online

Heiter sessions are monthly online “heiter experiences” that give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in an creative and/or calming activity and thus, add more joy to your daily life. In July we will meet for a “Communicating Emotions Through Photography” (zoom) workshop with Vanessa Simpson.

The 60min session takes place on Thursday, the 14th of July at 10am BST | 11am CET. We will explore how we respond to photographs, how they can make us feel and how we can make photographs that endeavour to convey emotion to the viewer. While we can never dictate how others will respond to an image we’ve created we can certainly help guide them.

We’ll consider a variety of different images by various photographers and reflect on how they make us feel before exploring why and how.

This is not a ‘how to use your camera’ workshop and it doesn’t matter whether you like to use a smartphone or the latest gear, but we will cover some basic techniques on how different styles of photography can help us express what we feel and how to communicate this.

There is also the chance to send in questions/problems you have regarding your photography. Katharina will collect all of them before the workshop and Vanessa will then get back to you with solutions/answers towards the end of the session.

There will also be a replay available for everyone (including those of you who cannot make it live).

Ticket price: €19

Heiter Session: Meditation and Intuitive Art Making with Hira S Ahmed

Heiter sessions are monthly online “heiter experiences” that give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in an creative and/or calming activity and thus, add more joy to your daily life. In June we will meet for an “Intuitive Art Making” (zoom) workshop with artist Hira S Ahmed

The 60min session takes place on Tuesday, the 7th of June at 1pm BST | 2pm CET. Please note that you will have to bring along equipment (see below). You will receive an email with the relevant zoom link prior to the session.

What Hira says about her workshop:

“This workshop is all about having a meditative experience of being in conversation with yourself and your emotions through art. Through mixed media art, I encourage you to play and discover the childlike wonder once again in your life.”

''You either walk inside your story and own it, or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness.'' - Brene Brown

The aim of the workshop is to inspire you to hold space for you, your story and lived experiences in a safe space without any judgement in the company of other like-minded creative humans.

We will begin with a 15-min long meditation during which Hira will share visualisation prompts. Afterwards we'll begin with our mixed media creations. The session will include some basic prompts to help you overcome the fear of blank canvas and to start exploring the mixed media medium in an intuitive way. You will have a unique piece of abstract art towards the end of the workshop. At the end of the workshop, we will take 15 mins to share what we have made, what we were thinking about, what it represents for us and how it feels to express those thoughts and emotions.

Play. Connect. Experience. Rejoice.

What to bring along:

  • any art materials that you have lying around you as we are making a Mixed Media abstract piece of art. That could be acrylics, watercolours, graphite pencils, coloured pencils, markers etc.

  • canvas or a piece of paper (preferably 300 gsm) if you are planning to use acrylics or watercolours

Who is the session for?

This experience is designed for everyone. You don’t need to know anything about meditation or art to be a part of this experience. You'll also enjoy the workshop if you are a seasoned artist. This could be your space to let go of control and explore something new that you haven't tried in a while. Come as you are and explore your creative expression through guided meditation and intuitive art.

There will also be a replay available for everyone (including those of you who cannot make it live).
